Thoughtful Thursday – Packing Up

Woody

Toy Story 3

Andy: Now Woody, he’s been my pal for as long as I can remember. He’s brave, like a cowboy should be. And kind, and smart. But the thing that makes Woody special, is he’ll never give up on you… ever. He’ll be there for you, no matter what.

Andy: [taking a last look at his toys before he heads off to college] Thanks, guys.

As I was cleaning up my children’s rooms today these lines kept running through my head.    We are in the process of cleaning out our house.   We are thinking of moving in the next year or so and we want to clean out  half of the items in our house.

Our things are fairly easy to sort through except the children’s toys.

Every toy I seem to pick up has a story or a meaning.  How do I decide which to give away and to keep?  The African marble game given to my daughter on her 3rd birthday?  The first baby doll she got just before our son was born whom she named after her brother?

So each item I pick up I think of who gave the item to them, how they play with it, who they play with it with….  It is taking me hours because I am very sentimental.

So each child has one Rubbermaid tote which I am packing with all their things to keep when they are adults.  It is difficult but I keep remembering even Andy had to let go of Buzz and Woody eventually.   The memories are built into your heart, not the item.
